| The philosopher-theologian Takizawa Katsumi was born in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, in 1909, and died in Fukuoka in 1984 at the age of 75. He was Professor of Kyusyu University and Honorary Doctor of Heidelberg University. Influenced by philosopher Nishida Kitaro and theologian Karl Barth, Takizawa in later years created his own theory of “Junsui Sinjingaku (Pure theo-anthropology).” He left many books and other writings. |

1924 Entered First High School (present Tokyo University) 1927 Entered Tokyo Imperial University. Enroled at the Department of French Law of the Faculty of Law. (Left in October.) 1928 Entered Kyusyu Imperial University. Enroled at the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Literature. 1931 Graduated from Kyusyu Imperial University. Assistant reader from May. 1932 Married Ogasawara Toshi. 1933 His paper appeared in Shiso (Thought), received Nishida’s high praise. Granted F-- Association Scholarship, and in October left for Germany to study there. 1934 Study under Karl Barth. 1935 Returned from Germany in August. 1936 Reader at the Department of Philosophy, Kyushu Imperial University. 1937 Left for his new post at Yamaguchi Higher
Commercial School. 1943 Part-time instructor at Kyusyu Imperial University. (Taught Western philosophy once a week.) 1945 Nishida Kitaro died. Japan defeated in World WarU. 1947 Full-time Instructor of Philosophy at the
Department of Philosophy of Kyusyu University. 1958 Christened together with his wife. 1961 Dean of the Faculty of Literature. (Till 1963.) 1965 Invited to Germany. See Karl Barth again for the first time in 30 years. 1968 With a U.S. jet plane crash on Kyushu University campus as a turning-point, became actively involved in Zenkyoto ( -- ). 1969 Open correspondence with Yamamoto Yoshitaka, the chairman of Tokyo University Zenkyoto, in Asahi Journal. 1971 Retired from Kyusyu University one year before his retirement age. 1972 Collected works of Takizawa Katsumi began to be published from Hozokan. (Completed in 10 volumes in 1975.) 1974 In July invited to Germany as a visiting professor for one year. 1976 Delivered public lectures on “The Gospel according to St. Mark”. 1977 Went to Germany as a visiting professor, teaching there until April the following year. 1978 His youngest daughter Hisako died on December 3. 1979 Went to Germany as a visiting professor (from April to October). After he returned to Japan, he developed an eye disease. 1980 Started taking a treatment of hand healing for his eye disease. 1981 Delivered public lectures on “The Gospel according to St. Matthew”. Also delivered public lectures on “Nihonjin no seisinkozo (The structure of Japanese mind)”. 1984 Died from acute leukemia on June 26. In September conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity by Heidelberg University. |
